Fabuwood Gris Plomo Matte Kitchen Cabinets
Available on the Catalina door
Somewhere between charcoal and a warm stone gray, this one has more body than a cool graphite and more restraint than black. The face is flat and matte, with a faint warm cast that keeps it from turning blue under downlights. It suits kitchens that want depth without the full commitment of a dark color.

Color & Look
The value sits just below mid-scale — dark enough to anchor a room, light enough that you can still read the edge of a door against a white wall. What separates it from the cooler grays in the same series is a trace of warmth, closer to wet slate than to steel. Put it beside a blue-gray paint and the blue in the paint jumps forward. Put it beside a beige and the gray in the cabinet takes over. It is a middle-ground color, and it behaves like one.
In a north-facing room the warmth mostly drops out and it settles into a flat, even charcoal — handsome, but quiet, and it can go grim if the only other color in the room is white. South and west light brings the warm side back and the doors take on a softer, almost greige edge late in the day. Because the surface is matte, the shift happens across the whole run at once rather than in bright patches, which makes the color easy to live with on long walls of cabinetry.
Most people first read it as a dark taupe, and a few call it brown until they see it against an actual brown. It is gray with a warm bias, not a brown with gray in it — the difference shows up immediately next to a walnut floor, where the floor pulls red and the cabinet does not. The door face is a plain slab with a single fine shadow line where the drawer front meets the door, so there is no bevel or molding to catch light; the color is the only thing on the door.
Construction & Quality
Gris Plomo Matte belongs to Fabuwood’s Illume & Ovela series — European frameless construction with applied gloss, matte and textured surfaces rather than paint or stain.
Every Fabuwood cabinet is fitted with Blum soft-close hinges and drawer systems. Fabuwood backs its cabinetry with a lifetime warranty, with a separate Blum warranty on the hardware, and lists CARB2 compliance and ICC-ES and AWI/QCP certification.
Fabuwood groups its colors in tiers. Gris Plomo Matte is a Designer color, which is made to order rather than stocked, so it is worth allowing for that in the schedule.
Where It Works
This is one of the few dark-ish colors that can take a whole kitchen without the room closing in, provided there is a window on more than one wall. It also does the two-tone job well: the full run in gray with a white or cream island, or the reverse. In a medium kitchen we often put it on the base cabinets and tall pantry run, which keeps the visual weight low and leaves the upper half of the room to the wall color.
Contemporary and transitional kitchens are the natural fit, though the color is calm enough to sit in a farmhouse scheme alongside white and warm wood. Outside the kitchen it is a strong choice for a primary bath vanity, where the depth reads as furniture rather than cabinetry, and for a laundry or mudroom that takes real traffic — dust and scuffs are far less obvious here than on white. A wet bar in this gray with brass pulls looks finished without shouting.
Pairing Ideas
Countertops
Near-solid white quartz is the cleanest answer. Vicostone Lacus or Vicostone Aspen, both bright whites, give a crisp horizontal line that stops the gray from spreading. If the room needs warming, Vicostone Galilea is a cream quartz that meets the warm side of this color halfway and keeps the scheme from going cold.
Countertops we carry →Backsplash
Keep it lighter than the doors. MSI Essentials Vena White or MSI GIRONA PERLA, both white porcelain, open the wall back up above a dark base run. MSI Lablanca Ridge Cordova adds texture in white if you want relief without contrast. Tonal is possible too — MSI Mattonella Carbone in gray reads almost like a shadow behind the counter.
Backsplash tile →Hardware
Warm metals read well against the warm side of this gray. The Berenson 128mm Champagne Bar Pull and the Berenson Swagger 160mm MDB Pull in bronze both pick up that warmth. Brushed nickel in the Berenson Bravo 56mm pull is the neutral choice and keeps things cool and quiet. Matte black works, but it flattens the difference between door and pull at a distance.
Pulls & knobs →Floors
Warm oak in engineered hardwood is the pairing we suggest most often; the gray stays neutral and lets the floor carry the warmth. Gray-toned LVP is the risk — two grays rarely agree, and a cool plank will make the cabinets look brown by comparison. Large-format porcelain in a soft cream also works and keeps the floor quiet.
