Kemper Moonstone Kitchen Cabinets

Offered in the Kemper Emerge series

Moonstone takes the same cool gray idea and drops it several steps deeper. It is a dark blue-gray — still clearly a gray rather than a blue — with enough weight to hold the bottom half of a kitchen. It reads composed rather than soft, and it does better with light around it.

Color & Look

Well below the midpoint in depth, Moonstone is dark enough to change the balance of a room but not so dark that it becomes a stand-in for black. The undertone is cool and blue, though more restrained than the lighter grays in the series — the added depth absorbs some of the blue and leaves the color reading more neutral. The sample is a smooth, even paint film with no glaze, no grain and no visible wiping anywhere in it.

Dark cool colors dull down quickly in poor light, and that is the main thing to plan for. In south or west light Moonstone looks rich and the blue is readable. In a north-facing kitchen it flattens toward a deep neutral gray and can look heavy on an overcast day. Warm bulbs at night bring some life back. Undercabinet lighting is not optional with a color at this depth; without it the countertop run goes dim.

Most people describe it as charcoal until they see it next to an actual charcoal, at which point the blue is obvious. Against Serious Gray it is the deeper and more neutral of the two. Against Grays Harbor it is slightly lighter and slightly less colored, which is a real difference on a big run even though the two samples look alike in the hand. Nothing in the finish breaks up the color — it is flat and continuous.

Where It Works

This is primarily a lower-cabinet and island color. Base cabinets in Moonstone with white or pale uppers is the arrangement that works in the widest range of rooms, and it gives a kitchen a defined bottom without darkening the whole space. A full kitchen in Moonstone is possible in a large, well-lit room with bright counters, but it is a committed look and we would talk it through carefully first.

It fits modern and transitional kitchens best, especially on flat slab fronts, though it also looks well-made on Shaker doors. Elsewhere in the house it is a strong choice for a bath vanity, a bar, a home office wall of cabinets, or mudroom lockers, where the depth earns its keep by hiding daily marks. In a powder room it can take everything, walls included, and still feel deliberate rather than dim.

Pairing Ideas

Countertops

Bright stone is essential at this depth. MSI Calacatta Laza Oro and MSI Calacatta Izaro, both bright white quartz with marble-look veining, give contrast and movement together. MSI Ivoritaj is the near-solid alternative for a quieter surface. For natural stone, MSI Denali in bright white quartzite is a durable, near-solid option above dark cabinets.

Backsplash

You can go either way here. MSI Avorio Ridge Cordova or MSI Hiphop Abedul Fluted in cream porcelain keep the wall light and warm the room considerably. For a darker, more unified look, MSI Graphite or MSI Folk Charcoal Fluted in gray porcelain lets the backsplash join the cabinets rather than interrupt them.

Hardware

Contrast is what makes a dark cabinet look finished. The Berenson Swagger 96mm Modern Brushed Gold Pull reads clearly against Moonstone and warms the blue. The Berenson Bravo 56mm Brushed Nickel Pull is the cooler, quieter alternative. The Berenson Swagger 160mm MDB Pull in bronze suits a room with warmer wood tones and a more traditional bent.

Floors

Keep the floor lighter than the cabinets. Natural white oak or a light to medium brown hardwood gives the room somewhere to breathe. Dark floors under Moonstone can make a kitchen feel bottom-heavy and closed. Light porcelain tile also works, particularly in a bath or laundry, and LVP in a light oak look handles the practical rooms without darkening them.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends almost entirely on the room. In a large kitchen with good windows and bright counters, a full run of Moonstone looks confident. In an average room with one window it will feel heavy by late afternoon. The safer version, and the one we build most often, puts Moonstone on the lowers and island with pale cabinets above.
They are close relatives. Grays Harbor is a touch deeper and carries slightly more color, so it looks marginally more blue and marginally more dramatic across a long run. Moonstone is the more restrained of the pair. In a small sample they are hard to separate, but over twenty feet of cabinetry the difference becomes visible.
Warm metals. Brass and champagne read clearly against a deep blue-gray and give the eye something to land on, which matters more on dark cabinets than on light ones. Brushed nickel is visible but quieter. Matte black effectively disappears at this depth, so we only use it where the pulls are meant to be felt rather than seen.
It needs good lighting, not special lighting. Undercabinet fixtures are the important part, because a dark base cabinet run swallows light and leaves the countertop dim. Warm-white bulbs also keep the color from going flat and gray at night. With both in place Moonstone holds its character after dark instead of collapsing into a dull neutral.
