What Is Tambour?
Solid Wood, Rendered Flexible
Tambour is a decorative surface made of narrow solid-wood slats mounted side by side on a flexible backing. Those two things together are the whole idea: genuine wood on the face, and a backing that lets it bend — so it carries the same rhythmic, ribbed texture around a curve as easily as it covers a flat wall.
Designers reach for it when a space needs warmth and movement without the weight of solid millwork: an accent wall behind a bed or television, the curved front of a kitchen island, a reception desk, or a cabinet-integrated feature. Because the slats are solid wood, it coordinates naturally with the cabinetry, flooring, and built-ins we design around it.
Bends Around Curves
Not Just for Flat Walls
What sets tambour apart from rigid panels is that it flexes. Each panel is built from real solid-wood slats bonded to a flexible backing — so you get the warmth and authenticity of genuine wood with a give that a single solid board could never have. That backing is exactly what lets the same material covering a flat feature wall also wrap the curved shapes most panels simply can’t.

Choosing a Profile
Same Wood, Three Different Textures
All three models share the same solid-wood slats, the same five wood species, and the same panel size — 11 13/16 in by 95 in, roughly a foot wide and eight feet tall, covering about 7.8 square feet each. What changes between them is the profile: its shape and how deep it stands off the wall.
Model 305
11/16 inConcave Flutes
Rounded channels scooped into the thickest of the three panels, with 3/8-inch-radius grooves. The deepest profile — it throws the strongest shadow lines for a bold, architectural texture that reads clearly across a room.
Model 705
7/16 inAngular Ridges
Crisp, flat-topped trapezoidal ridges at a medium depth — a 3/4-inch base narrowing to a 3/16-inch top. A clean, contemporary, faceted look that catches light along defined edges.
Model 383
5/16 inRounded Beads
Softly rounded half-round reeds standing just proud of the backing. The shallowest, most understated of the three — a gentle, tactile ribbing rather than a deep relief.
All three are made for vertical interior surfaces — feature walls, island and cabinet fronts, columns, and the like. They are not intended for floors, countertops, or other horizontal or load-bearing uses, or for outdoor exposure.
Five Wood Species
Choose the Grain and Tone That Fits
Each species reads differently once it is finished and lit. Here is how they generally compare — see the actual samples in our showroom before you decide.
White Oak
Light to medium tone with a straight, subtle grain. A calm, contemporary look that suits bright, modern rooms and pairs cleanly with painted cabinetry.
Walnut
Rich, dark chocolate-brown with warm undertones and flowing grain. The most dramatic of the five — a natural centerpiece for a feature wall.
Maple
Pale, smooth, and remarkably uniform. Its understated grain keeps the focus on the ribbed profile itself rather than the wood pattern.
Red Oak
Warm tone with a pronounced, open grain and plenty of character. A classic North American hardwood look that feels familiar and inviting.
Poplar
Pale and even-toned with minimal figure. Often the practical choice when the tambour will be painted or kept intentionally understated.
