Kemper Elowen Kitchen Cabinets
Offered in the Kemper Emerge series
Deep, dry and olive-leaning, Elowen is the darkest color in this group — a muted green-gray closer to a field uniform than to a garden. It reads almost as a neutral from across a room and as a definite green up close. It suits kitchens that want depth without reaching for black or navy.

Color & Look
Value first: this is a genuinely dark color, well below the midpoint, which is what gives it its presence. The hue is olive — yellow-green rather than blue-green — and the saturation is low, so it stays dusty and dry rather than bright. The chip is a flat painted sample with an even, matte-looking surface and no grain or glaze in it, which means large doors will hold a single deep tone with no variation to soften it.
North light flattens it toward a dark gray-green and can make it look almost charcoal at a distance. Direct sun does the opposite and brings the yellow in the olive right up, so the same cabinets can look distinctly green on a bright afternoon. Under warm evening bulbs it goes browner and deeper still. That range is wide, and with a dark color it matters more than usual — a mistake at this value is hard to live with.
It is most often mistaken for a dark gray in photographs, and for a brown-black in low light. Against a true sage like Coastal Plain the difference is obvious: Coastal Plain is light and soft, Elowen is dark and dense. Against Ashwood, the green shows clearly. If you have been looking at deep green cabinets and finding most of them too blue or too bright, this is the muted, earthy end of that family.
Construction & Quality
Kemper has been making cabinetry in America since 1926 and is part of the MasterBrand family. Offered in the Kemper Emerge series.
Emerge is Kemper’s most personalized series: all-plywood construction, custom sizing, and a choice of full-overlay, inset or beaded-inset doors, with specialty finishes, stain and glaze options and multiple edge profiles.
Kemper backs its cabinetry with a limited lifetime warranty; coverage and terms are set by Kemper.
Where It Works
At this depth, an island or a run of base cabinets is the most common and most forgiving use — the color anchors the room and the lighter cabinets above keep it from closing in. A full kitchen in Elowen is a real option in a bright room with large windows and pale counters, and it looks its best in a larger space with high ceilings. In a small dark kitchen we would use it sparingly or not at all.
Elsewhere it does some of its best work. A bath vanity in a deep olive looks intentional next to white tile rather than experimental. A butler’s pantry or bar in Elowen, with brass and a bright counter, is one of the more satisfying small rooms you can build. An office with built-ins in this color feels grounded rather than gloomy, particularly with natural wood shelving alongside.
Pairing Ideas
Countertops
Contrast is what makes a dark cabinet work. Cambria White Cliff, Cambria MacBeth, Cambria Dovestone and Cambria Swanbridge are near-solid bright whites that read clean and sharp above the olive. Cambria Berkshire Steel Satin Ridge is a quieter bright white. For a warmer, busier top, MSI Giallo Ornamental or MSI Snowfall are cream granites with veining that pick up the yellow in the paint.
Countertops we carry →Backsplash
White is the sensible partner for a dark green kitchen, and the choice is really about shape. MSI Calacatta Gold Matte 1x6 Stack Pattern is clean and linear; MSI Lascari Picket and MSI Georama Grigio Geometric add pattern. MSI Moderno Blanco Interlocking 12x18 Pattern 8mm Metal brings a metallic edge, and MSI Citi Stax Lapis Glass gives the wall more depth.
Backsplash tile →Hardware
Warm metals are what most people want against olive, and for good reason — the Berenson Swagger 96mm Modern Brushed Gold Pull or the Berenson 128mm Champagne Bar Pull both pick up the yellow in the green and look deliberate. Bronze is the quieter traditional route. Matte black works too, though on a dark cabinet it disappears, so use it when you want the hardware unseen.
Pulls & knobs →Floors
A mid-tone wood floor is the easiest partner, giving the eye a step between the dark cabinets and a bright counter. Warm oak suits the olive particularly well. A very dark floor can work in a large, bright kitchen but will make a small one feel like a box. Light floors give maximum contrast, which is striking, though the cabinets then carry all the weight.
