J&K Contemporary Cabinet Doors

J&K sorts its door styles into three families, and contemporary is the one that keeps ornament to a minimum — square lines, little or no moulding, and the finish doing most of the work. Four door styles sit in this family: S8 White, S5 Castle Grey, S1 Java Coffee and CO66 Cinnamon Glazed. J&K lists each as a code paired with its own finish, so choosing a door here also chooses a color.

Construction

Every door in this family is built the same way J&K builds the rest: 100% solid wood, with a 3/4″ thick solid-wood full-overlay door and drawers of 5/8″ solid wood on all sides in dovetail construction. The box is cabinet-grade plywood with a clear-coated interior, reinforced with corner brackets in the base cabinets.

Doors run on 6-way adjustable, soft-close hidden Euro-style hinges and drawers on soft-close concealed undermount glides, with quiet-closing bumpers on the doors. On the S styles here, J&K builds the center panel as an all-wood reversed raised panel.

The finish is where J&K spends its time: a ten-step, hand-rubbed process — an equalizer stain to balance the wood, a toner for even color, a deep penetrating stain to draw out the grain, then hand-rubbing, sealing, hand-sanding, an optional hand-applied glaze and a top coat. The hardwood-plywood is EPA TSCA Title VI (CARB 2) compliant and the coatings are AkzoNobel.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is J&K’s own grouping — the spec book sorts every door style into contemporary, traditional or transitional. In practice the contemporary doors carry the least detail: square frames, flat or lightly stepped panels, and no decorative moulding. With so little profile to catch shadow, the finish and the hardware end up carrying the look of the kitchen.
Not freely. J&K lists each door style with its own finish, so in this family your choices are White, Castle Grey, Java Coffee and Cinnamon Glazed. Wanting a different color usually means a different door style, which may sit in another family — or a different cabinet line altogether. We will tell you plainly which way gets you closer.
No. The box, the drawers, the hinges and the finishing process are identical across all three families — 100% solid wood, dovetail drawer boxes, soft-close hardware and the same ten-step hand-rubbed finish. What changes between families is the face of the door: how much profile it carries and how much shadow that profile throws.
