Bertch Woodbury Bathroom Vanity Style

Classic series · Framed · Architectural

Woodbury is a square shaker front with wide rails and a face frame left deliberately visible around every piece. The frame becomes part of the drawing. It suits bathrooms where you want the vanity to read as carpentry built into the room rather than as a cabinet set against the wall.

Design & Profile

The door is a square-edged frame around a flat recessed panel, and the rails and stiles are noticeably wide — wide enough that the panel reads as a smaller field inside a substantial border. Nothing is moulded. The inner edge drops straight to the panel, the outer edge is square, and the only line on the door is the step into the recess. That heaviness in the frame is what separates Woodbury from a lighter shaker door.

The drawer fronts follow suit. The two stacked drawers are frame-and-panel with the same wide borders, so their panels end up small and horizontal, and the wide drawer across the top compresses to a long slot of a panel inside a thick frame. Stacked together, the fronts read as a column of heavy rectangles beside the door, each panel smaller in proportion to its front than you would expect.

Then the face frame itself shows. Rather than being covered by the fronts, broad flat frame members stand between the door and the drawer bank and around the outside, so the vanity is drawn with structural lines before anything opens. In a small bathroom that reads as solidity — the piece looks built rather than installed — though it does trade some front area for frame, which is a fair price if the look is what you are after.

Series & Construction

Woodbury is part of Bertch’s Classic series — framed · architectural. Classic is Bertch’s framed series, built in solid hardwood and offered in more door styles and finishes than any other — stains, painted colors and hand-applied glazes across eight wood species.

Bertch builds these on 3/4" solid hardwood door frames with raised or flat panels, 5/8" solid hardwood drawer boxes dovetailed front and back, and plywood floors, backs and shelves with a natural birch veneer interior. Undermount soft-close drawer glides and concealed soft-close hinges come standard.

Every Bertch vanity is built to order in Waterloo, Iowa: configurations, storage solutions, tops and finishes are selected per project, nothing is off-the-shelf. Bertch warrants its products to be free from defects in material or workmanship for as long as they are owned by the original purchaser.

Finishes

Wide frames give paint a lot of flat area, and a single painted color is the cleanest way to read this style: the panels drop into shadow and the frame grid comes forward as one surface. Stains do something more complex. Straight grain runs the length of each wide rail and stile, so the border shows a pattern of its own around the quieter panel, and on a strongly figured wood the frame can end up busier than the center. Glazes are optional here — square edges give them only a corner to hold, so expect an outline rather than an aged surface.

Pairing Ideas

Vanity Top

Bertch Solid White — Cultured Marble or Bertch Sea Salt — Oasis Solid Surface sit quietly above all those frame lines. Bertch Galena — Oasis Solid Surface and Bertch Carbon — Oasis Solid Surface weight the top and make the frame grid read harder. For movement, Bertch White Ice — Veined Quartz; as the custom stone route, Cambria Fieldstone — gray quartz.

Sink & Bowl

An integrated bowl on an Oasis top keeps the deck in one piece, which suits a front already divided into this many rectangles. Undermounting under quartz introduces another edge — fine, but one more line in a busy composition. With wide frames eating into the drawer openings, a second bowl is a real cost here: the plumbing usually claims what is left of the lower drawer.

Hardware & Legs

Wide frames take larger hardware than a light shaker can. Berenson Metro 160mm Matte Black Pull sits well on the broad drawer fronts, and Berenson Bravo 56mm Brushed Nickel Pull keeps a painted version quiet. Where the cabinet stands free of a wall, Wood Leg 18 or the Metal Leg under a square front both read as deliberate rather than decorative.

Mirror & Lighting

Line the mirror up with the cabinet opening rather than the outer frame, so the frame reads as a margin on both sides. A square-cornered mirror echoes the panels. Sconces beside it light the face evenly; an overhead fixture alone will deepen the shadow in every recessed panel and make the front look darker than it really is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the fronts are sized to leave it showing. On most of the framed series the doors and drawers cover nearly all of the frame and you see only thin reveals; here broad flat frame members stay in view between and around the fronts. That is the design, and it is what makes the vanity read as built joinery rather than as a cabinet with doors on it.
A little. Frame width that stays visible is width that is not drawer opening, so on a narrow vanity the drawers come out slightly smaller than they would behind full-overlay fronts. On a wider cabinet it barely registers. We plan storage around what you actually keep in the bathroom, so if drawer capacity is the priority, that is worth saying before the style is chosen.
Proportion and exposure. The rails and stiles are wider, which shrinks the panel and makes each front look heavier, and the fronts leave the face frame showing instead of covering it. Side by side with a lighter shaker the door profiles are nearly identical; what changes is how much frame you see, and how much of each front is border rather than panel.
Rooms with some architecture already — a wainscot, a wide casing, a floor with a pattern that holds its own. The visible frame on the vanity then reads as part of the same carpentry. In a plain room with flat drywall and a simple tile, the heavy frame can look like the only structural thing present, which tends to make the vanity feel larger than it is.
