Bertch Quebec Bathroom Vanity Style

Classic series · Framed

Quebec pairs a raised-panel door with slab drawer fronts. The door frame carries a bold profiled outer edge and a deep cove at the panel, and the panel itself rises on a wide bevel. The drawers are plain faces finished with the same shaped edge. It is the most furniture-like front in the Classic group.

Design & Profile

The door reads in three moves. The outer edge of the frame is shaped rather than square — a rounded profile that catches light along the whole perimeter. Inside that, the frame face falls away in a deep cove to the panel recess. Then the panel climbs back out on a broad bevel to a flat center field that sits nearly level with the frame. That bevel is wide, taking a large share of the panel area, and it is what gives the door its weight.

The drawers are the surprise. Rather than repeating the raised panel, Bertch leaves the drawer fronts as plain slabs with no frame and no panel, finished with the same shaped profile around the edge. The wide top drawer and the two stacked drawers all do this. The result is a front where the door carries all the ornament and the drawers read as the smooth faces of a dresser — a very old furniture-making habit, and an effective one.

In a bathroom that split is practical as well as pretty. The surfaces nearest the sink, the ones that get splashed and opened with wet hands, are the flat drawer faces — easy to wipe in a single pass. The worked profile sits on the door below, further from the water. The whole cabinet reads as a dresser with a top on it, which suits a freestanding vanity better than a long run of built-in casework.

Series & Construction

Quebec is part of Bertch’s Classic series — framed. Classic is Bertch’s framed series, built in solid hardwood and offered in more door styles and finishes than any other — stains, painted colors and hand-applied glazes across eight wood species.

Bertch builds these on 3/4" solid hardwood door frames with raised or flat panels, 5/8" solid hardwood drawer boxes dovetailed front and back, and plywood floors, backs and shelves with a natural birch veneer interior. Undermount soft-close drawer glides and concealed soft-close hinges come standard.

Every Bertch vanity is built to order in Waterloo, Iowa: configurations, storage solutions, tops and finishes are selected per project, nothing is off-the-shelf. Bertch warrants its products to be free from defects in material or workmanship for as long as they are owned by the original purchaser.

Finishes

A wide bevel is the best surface in the series for showing what a stain can do. The bevel cuts across the panel’s grain all the way around, so color lands deeper there than on the flat center field, and the panel outlines itself in a darker tone before any glaze is applied at all. On a figured species that effect can be striking; on a plain one it reads as quiet shading around the field.

Glaze goes into the cove and along the shaped outer edge, outlining the door and leaving the slab drawers almost untouched — which exaggerates the contrast between the worked door and the plain fronts. Some people love that; others would rather the pieces match. Paint evens everything out and lets the bevel read purely as a shadow. We would look at a sample of each on this style before choosing.

Pairing Ideas

Vanity Top

Bertch’s own tops first. Bertch Latte — Oasis Solid Surface and Bertch Walnut Toffee — Oasis Solid Surface lean into the furniture read, while Bertch Pewter — Oasis Solid Surface and Bertch Jameson — Oasis Solid Surface cool it down. Bertch Simply Grey — Veined Quartz adds gentle veining over a raised panel. Cambria Summerhill — cream quartz is the custom-stone route.

Sink & Bowl

An Oasis top comes with the bowl integrated, giving a single surface above a dresser-like cabinet — the simplest cap for a front with this much shape on the door. Undermount suits quartz or stone. Since the drawers here are plain slabs, losing them to a second bowl costs less visually than on the panelled styles, so a double-bowl layout is easier to justify.

Hardware & Legs

The slab drawers are open ground, so the hardware shows. The Berenson Epoch Edge 128mm Vintage Nickel Pull (vintage nickel) and the Berenson 128mm Champagne Bar Pull (gold/champagne) both suit the furniture read, and ribbed pieces from the Richelieu Inspiration section in gold or brass look right on a plain face. Wood Leg 12 or Wood Leg 18 finishes the dresser effect.

Mirror & Lighting

Treat it like a dresser mirror: narrower than the cabinet, centered on the bowl, and simple enough not to compete with the door’s profile. Sconces at either side flatter a face and leave the raised panel to catch soft light from above. A single overhead fixture darkens the cove and can make the door look heavier than it really is.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a furniture convention. Case pieces have long combined a worked door with smooth drawer faces, because repeating a raised panel at drawer scale crowds the front and makes a cabinet look fussy. Leaving the drawers flat gives the door room to be the feature, and it has the side benefit of being the easiest surface in the bathroom to wipe down.
The panel is cut so that its edges slope away and its center field stands back out toward the frame face, instead of sitting flat in a recess. On Quebec the slope — the bevel — is wide, which is why the panel reads as a shape rather than as a flat board. It is the traditional way to build a solid wood panel that can still move with the seasons.
It can, particularly on a single freestanding vanity where the dresser quality has room to be seen. What does not suit a small room is a long run of Quebec doors, because the raised panels repeat and the front gets heavy. If the vanity is the only cabinet in the room, the plain drawer faces keep the overall weight down more than you would expect.
